Reflection of Term 2

On May 26th we went to the Howick Historical Village for the day and on the 4th of June we went to M.O.T.A.T for the day and we had a lot of fun. We learnt that new innovations always bring challenges and opportunities. At both these places we saw innovations from the past to the present in housing, work related tools, communication technology, transport etc.

In Mathematics we learnt about measurement in the first part of the term and then we learnt how to multiply and divide using smart strategies. In the last part of the term we also did some work in Algebra.

Technology has been fun for both the girls and boys. In the cooking classes with Miss Tafira we learnt how to make many yummy dishes. Our theme for the term was Kiwiana food and so we made various dishes using New Zealand ingredients.

Room 3 was lucky to have Miss Yee as our student teacher. She was a lot of fun. She helped us with our work. To show our appreciation, before she left we had a shared lunch to thank her for teaching us. During her time with us she would give us fake money when we did something good. At the end of her time with us she brought in some items such as red and blue pens, chocolate, lollipops, ice-creams and pencils. Each of us counted our money and bought something from Miss Yee using our money.

Mrs Parker-Tofa has become a blog addict on behalf of our class. She is constantly putting our work on our blog for us. She has also been teaching us how to use the blog and how to make comments on other students’ work from our school and from different schools in our cluster.

For our Unit Study we had to do I.R.T assignments. Those were fun and helped us learn a lot. We had to research our information. Find a timeline about our topics and then make a presentation using our information. We also had to present our IRT to the whole class and then Mrs Parker-Tofa assessed our work.

For Oral Language we had to write speeches and present our speech to the class. The introduction of our speech was a mihi which we learnt to write with Mrs Bailey in Te Reo.

Term two has been an amazing term. We have been busy all term and we have had fun learning.

I am looking forward to Term 3 and to know what Mrs Parker-Tofa has in store for us.

Memories of Term 2

In term 2 we were able to experience new learning and school related trips to strengthen our learning.

We had a student teacher named Miss Yee. We did a lot of things with Miss Yee like maths and reading. Miss Yee gave us fake money for being good we got 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2. At the end of her time with us we got to count our money and buy things from her collection of items that we could afford with our money.

We went to the Howick Historical Village to see how they lived in the olden days. We did some activities with the people that worked there. One activity was to make a go-cart. Not many groups finished making their go-cart, but we enjoyed the activity because we had to problem solve and cooperate with each other to complete the task and ride on the cart we made.

We also went to MOTAT to look at innovations from the past to the present in transport and communication for our topic study. During the day at MOTAT we looked at many different displays. After lunch at MOTAT our class had to go into the workshop for an education session on communication gadgets and how they improved over the years. There we had a teacher called Katie who taught us all about communication. We had an opportunity to look at and use the telegraph machine, radiograms, telephones, slide projectors, signalling systems, feather tip pens, typewriters and other old gadgets people used in the past. We learnt that innovations bring with them challenges and also opportunities.

There have been a lot of sports tournaments that our school took part in and one of them was a boy’s rugby tournament at Dunkirk. We played against Pt England, Sylvia Park, Bailey Road and Sacred Heart. We performed very well. The year 7 boys had a soccer tournament at Glendowie and we played against many other intermediate schools and did our very best.

It has been a busy term and I am sure next term will be another exciting and busy term. I can’t wait!!!

Our Trip to Motat

On Friday 4th June all the year 7 students went on a trip to Motat. We went by bus and some students went by van and car.

The reason we went to Motat is because we were learning about communication. When we arrived we were met by Katie and she told us that we are going to do some fun activities.

Then we went inside and had out morning tea. When we finished our morning tea we had to listen for our activities. We were also separated into groups. Our class Room 3 were separated into three groups. My group leader was Miss Yee our student teacher.
Our first activity was going to the Vehicle Gallery. We were looking at traffic lights and a green car. When we were looking for the traffic lights Miss Yee noticed that there was a Solar Kiwi that looks like an aeroplane.

After going to the Vehicle Gallery our next activity was the Communications House. We went in for ten minutes and when Chloe made the phone ring I went and picked up the phone and talked to her. Chloe and I were talking to each other and after that Miss Yee told us its time for us to go to our next activity.

Our next activity was going to Whisper Dishes. Chloe and Makareta ran and whispered to Johnny and Isi. We were whispering to each other and saying things to each other.
After the Whisper Dishes we went on a tram ride. When we arrived, our other class members were there with their groups. The Tram ride was fun. We listened to the history of the tram we were on. After the tram ride we had lunch with all the classes.

After lunch our class went to the workshop. We had to walk to where the classroom is. Katie was our educator. She told us about how communication was in the past and devices that were made in the present. It was interesting to see how big mobile phones used to be. The disks that could save work on from the computer were huge in the past. It is bigger than a big frying pan. After Katie’s presentation we got to experiment with the devices in the classroom.

When we finished our workshop, we walked back to meet the other classes. We said thank you to Katie for hosting us and started walking towards the bus. Our trip to Motat was a fun and interesting trip.
